Hip Hop 4 Life

So… hip hop entered my life with the Sugar Hill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ in 1980. I know, I know… hip hop started out in the Bronx in the early to mid 70s and Rappers Delight was actually released in 1979 but it did not reach me in Ann Arbor, Michigan until early 1980 when I went to my cousin’s house and heard it for the first time.

The history of that song has been well covered in recent years in a number of hip hop documentaries.

I remember listening to that song over and over. It was the first rap song that I learned all the words to. I don’t know what compelled me to do so but… ‘I said a hip / hop / the hippie to the hippie…’ will forever be burned into my memory.
